Rantakylan Koulu, Mikkeli, Finland MetLink students sample the snow in Finland (Erkki Katainen). There have been very low temperatures of minus 20.4 deg C and a lot of snow during the 2002 MetLink project.

Bor School, Sweden Christer Helander with his MetLink class.Christer has pioneered many weather project ideas and his classes have designed and made their own weather instruments. Every day pupils from year 8 measure temperature (including max and min), rainfall (snowfall), air pressure, wind-force, wind direction and cloudiness.

Students at Bor have made their own weather insturments

Bor school, Sweden MetLink observers. They also make a short description of the weather. Readings are at 07.30 GMT every day. During the morning the readings are sent to the database on the MetLink database home page. After half an hour the readings appear together with weather descriptions and comments on special weather situations from all MetLink schools around the world.

the weather station?

Pitsford Hall Weather Station UK Weather observing team.

Pitsford Hall is an independent meteorological station maintained by the Department of Geography at Northamptonshire Grammar School, UK.

Climatological observations are made daily according to the criteria of the UK Meteorological Office at 0900 hours UTC using classical instrumentation. Weather observations are also made round the clock every 30 minutes using a Davis Vantage Pro automatic weather station.

Both the main set of climatological observations and current weather conditions are available. In addition to recording the weather, the station produces a forecast for Northamptonshire which is released daily

Bor School, Sweden MetLink group with their teachers Henric Gustavson and Christer Helander examining thermometers of different ages, especially the Galilei type. It was very cold at the end of last year in southern Sweden. The picture (above) shows the indoor and outdoor temperatures at New Year's Eve 2001 in Varnamo. A suitable task for the students is to calculate the temperature difference.

James Gibbons School, Edmonton, Canada a young student entering the weather information into the database before it is submitted. We have shared our data with a number of other schools around the world.

James Gibbons School, Edmonton, Canada We conducted a number of experiments prior to the project. The photo on the students who had made hydrometers using milk cartons. Our project involved us observing the maximum and minimum temperature, the barometric pressure, wind direction and speed, humidity, precipitation and cloud cover.

James Gibbons School, Edmonton, Canada We placed the following instruments in a wooden screen that was built for us and was mounted on the school roof. This allowed the air to flow inside and around the instruments but kept the instruments in the shade. The photo on the left shows some of the students carrying our screen outside. As you can see the sun was quite bright; it was around 11.30 am.
